Scott Nicholson Reports: Accompanying Social Organizations in Colombia

Nely seeking information about her spouse Luis Albeiro

Putting the Spin on Repression

“Luis Albeiro was grabbed by a group of men in Arenal the evening of May 29. Later on, six shots were fired. People ran to see what had happened but armed men kept them away from the site where the shots had been fired. The body was then dumped into a branch of the Magdalena River that runs alongside the neighborhood."

HELP IS NEEDED IN COLOMBIA

Concerned activists in Colombia have requested accompaniment, or on-the-ground presence of U.S. citizens because the paramilitaries are less likely to follow through on their threats in the presence of international witnesses.

Through this work, CAJA has developed sister relations with the Dawn of Women for Arauca women´s organization, Joel Sierra Regional Human Rights Committee, Coca-Cola workers union (SINALTRAINAL), and the Cimitarra River Valley Peasant Association. Through ongoing accompaniment for human right leaders, and advocacy for a just foreign policy, CAJA is working to improve human rights in Colombia.

Campaign for a Sweatfree Montana!
Endorse the Campaign Now!

It no longer a secret that most goods we purchase in the United States are produced under sweatshop conditions. From clothing to electronics, the items we buy are made by workers who labor long hours in inhumane conditions for wages that don’t even allow them provide for their families’ basic needs. In Missoula, we too can work to combat this “global race to the bottom” by organizing a coalition of local community groups, unions, human rights and environmental organizations to get the City of Missoula to become Sweatfree! To get involved, contact CAJA at 549-9697, or e-mail erinrenee@hotmail.com
